The
Municipal territory of Chitignano, in the Val di Chiana, extends over an
area of 14,70 square kilometres on a spur of the eastern slope of the
Alpe di Catenaia, sloping to the imposing valley of the Rassina Stream.
It was originally a feudal centre ; became community in 1780
and on that date the hamlets of Taena and Rosina were attributed to it.
If the Municipal territory from Roman times to Medieval times was
crossed by the road which connected Arezzo,
crossing the Apennines, to the valley of Savio, the centre is noted
for the first time in 967 in a certificate by Ottone I listing
the courts given in feudal to Goffredo di Ildebrando his vassal ;
it was passed on then through the Counts of Chiusi to the Ubertini after
having remained at length in the possession of a branch of this powerful
Lordly stock towards 1325 the castle became part of the dominion of
Guido Tarlati, Bishop of Arezzo.
But with the definite Fiorentina acquisition of the major part
of the Arezzo
territory in 1384, Chitgnano was again given to the command of
the Ubertini who, under the guardianship of Firenze, maintained the Lordship
until the 1700’s abolition of the feudal rights in the
Grand Duchy of Toscana, (except a short period in 1402 when the momentous
alliance of the Ubertini with the Visconti provoked the reaction of Firenze,
bringing the Ubertini quickly back in line).
