The Giuncugnano territory, in high Garfagnana, extends for 18.94 square kilometres on the slopes of the spur which joins the Alpi Apuane to the Appenninica chain, on the borders of the Garfagnana with the Lunigiana. It is the highest municipality in the Garfagnana.

The territory of Giuncugnano is made up of seven villages, each of which – like Capoli and Magliano – boasts a documented citation going back for more than one thousand years; but the area seems to have always lived on the margin of the great events: first under the dominion of Lucca, it passed in the middle of the 1400s to the Estensi and then followed the more general events of the municipals of the high Garfagnana.
