Dog rose, Rosa

Family of rosaceae
We are hesitant in saying if this plant is more beautiful in June, when
it covers with magnificent rosy flowers, or in Winter when the branches,
reddened by the frost, show small berries which have a coral colour. The
fruits are scientifically called with the ugly name of "cinorrodo"
and they are rich of vitamin "C" and have a strong tonic and
astringent power.

Use
With its fruits it is possible to obtain a good jam which, as
all the jams of wood fruits, is certainly lacked of chemical waste.
The fruits have to be picked up in December-January when ice has made
them soft and doughy. Open the fruits, remove the seeds, boil them
with water, let the water dry and then mash them by using a mincer.
Then add to this kind of purée an amount of sugar of the same
weight, melt on fire and then put the jam in jars, when it is still
hot. The jam can be prepared also with apples and quinces. |
