A mountainous territory in the high Val di Lima, the municipality of Piteglio extends for 50,05 square kilometres. Feudal centre, then Seat of Podesta office, it became a community with the administrative reforms of Pietro Leopoldo, it reached its present day aspect in 1939 with the aggregation of the district of Prunetta detached from the municipality of Pistoia.

Piteglio, which is said to have been founded by the Liguri as military garrison, was at least from the XII century a fortified centre, feudal to the Guidi Counts of Modigliana and this is confirmed, together with that of the nearby castle of Popiglio, by Imperial Certificates by Arrigo VI in 1191 and Federico II in 1220 and 1247. It became part of the district of Pistoia assuming a form of municipal government with its own Podesta having jurisdiction also on the castle of Popiglio. In the second half of the 1300s it became part of the Captaincy of the Pistoia Mountains and suffered more resurgences until the beginning of the 1500 with hardships and sorrows of the interminable civil struggles of the Panciatichi and the Cancellieri which raged through the Pistoia territory. In 1538 Cosimo I managed to establish the definitive stretch of borders with the republic of Lucca after a long contest.
