Situated in Maremma, the municipal territory extends for 26,59 square kilometres in a wooded basin on the mountains of the Follonica hinterland. Autonomous community from 1776 with the Leopoldini treaty, it was aggregated to the Livorno province in 1925.

Cited in documents from the XI and XII centuries as possession of the Orlandi family, who probably came from Sassetta and transferred to Pisa becoming part of the municipality’s management class.

The castle was subjected to the political dominion of the Tyrrhenian republic, who kept it until 1406 when it passed under the Fiorentina jurisdiction. In 1539 Cosimo I dei Medici, as cadre, changed to create incomes destined to the members of his own court (followed with particular interest in Val di Cecina), making the community feudal, and assigning it at first to Captain Matteo Sabatini da Fabriano, then to his secretary Piero Mustefilo di San Genesio and finally to Antonio Ramirez di Montalvo. It returned as direct property of the Grand Duchy, Sassetta shared the fate of the Toscano State until the Unity of Italy. It was part of the territorial district of Pisa until 1613 the year in which it was aggregated to that of Firenze.

Places to visit:
Palazzo Ramirez di Montalvo, placed at the centre of the town, it was restructured in the 1700s
S.Andrea, parochial which preserves internally an admirable 1400s baptismal font.
