Inhabitants in 1991: 4.016

The municipal territory of Uzzano extends for 7,82 square kilometres on the medium hills of the Valdinievole, from where it dominates the plains basin of the river Pescia. Free municipality then Seat of Podesta office, it was constituted in community in 1775 and reached its present day aspect in 1963 with the detachment of the district of Chiesina Uzzanese (aggregated to Uzzano in 1895) which is now an autonomous municipality.

From the first years of the XIII century (but the fortified centre has origins much older being documented as Castle de Mano from XI century) there is testimony of Uzzano as municipality to the Consul regime, even under the authority of Lucca. In 1339 after repeated waring episodes, it became, together with many other Valdinievole centres, definitively part of the Fiorentino State, to whom it continued to maintain faithful subject, receiving periodically Fiorentini citizens as Podesta and Castiglian of the fort, and in 1355 thwarting a traitorous plan which would have allowed the Ghibellino di Pescia Giovanni Garzone, to become patron of the castle: it instead fell into the hands of the rebel Piero Strozzi at the time of the Medicea war for the conquest of Siena, in 1554, but from there soon returned into the possession of the troops of Cosimo I also for the decisive contribution of the Uzzanesi themselves.
