The
Monti Pisani was one of the main battlegrounds of the fifteenth and sixteenth
century wars between Pisa and Firenze. The clashes between the opposing
factions must have been extremely bloody if it is true that the Sasso
della Dolorosa owes its name to the slaughter and pain inflicted in battle.
Having got past the Sasso della Dolorosa you arrive at the pass of Prato
Arreto, an important saddle that can be recognised by a tall wooden cross
that stands on the left. This is the last of six passes to be overcome
on this proposed route.
