Fires
are undoubtedly one of the main problems afflicting the Monti Pisani chain;
many are the result of a lack of care on the part of tourists and trippers,
but others are clearly started deliberately. The dry conditions in the
summer, the light breezes in these mountains in all seasons, and the inaccessibility
of the area contribute to the difficulty of controlling and extinguishing
fires. For this reason, a number of 'tracks' have been opened up in the
last few decades to function as fire lines. These enable fire-fighting
equipment to reach the affected area and also form barriers which make
it easier to bring fires under control.
